CHICK MANAGEMENT
Before baby chicks arrive, completely clean and disinfect brooder house, provide 2-4 inches of good dry litter.
Breeding - Provide adequate number of brooders.  Follow brooder manufacturer's recommendation on number of birds per brooder.  Provide a chick guard around the brooder to keep chicks from straying and to prevent floor drafts.  Place chick guard 2-3 feet from edge of hover.  Gradually expand it, and remove by 7-10 days of age.  Use dim lights to prevent piling for one to three weeks only.
Temperature - Should be 95 degrees at chick level and reduced 5 degrees per week, until you reach 65 degrees and hold constant until you remove brooders.  A good indication of proper temperature is when all birds spread out evenly around the brooder.  Minimum room temperature should be 65 degrees for the first 2 weeks.

PULLET MANAGEMENT
Treat pullets for internal and external parasites depending on a demonstrated need.  Vaccinations to be considered are Newcastle, Infectious Bronchitis, and Fowlpox, depending on local conditions.  If you have disease problems, consult your nearest Poultry Diagnostic Laboratory.  Provide adequate ventilation at all times.  Keep young and old birds separate.  Remove any unthrifty pullets.

LAYER MANAGEMENT
Always keep obvious culls removed.
Parasite Control - Special attention should be given to the problems of external and internal parasites.  Consult your FRM Dealer about dewormer and delousing products.
Nest Space - Provide a minimum of 20 individual nests per 100 birds - or two 2 X 6 feet community type nests per 100 birds.
Ventilation - Ventilation in a poultry house supplies fresh air, which is essential to sustain life.  It also helps reduce the extremes of temperature, humidity and air contamination which contributes to better litter condition.  This is very necessary in chick, pullet, and layer management.

ARTIFICIAL LIGHT
When birds are 22 weeks old, provide 14 hours of light per day.  When birds are 32 weeks old, increase light 15 minutes per week until you reach a 19 hour day, then maintain this for the life of the bird.
